is programming means to an end or more?
since ive been programming since i was 12 and been inside a lot of rabbit holes and seen a lot of stereotypes
ive considered programming as a form of art / craft
where your main goal if you’re programming must be to get better at it, know everything about it, write clean code, fast code, cross platform, have the sexiest setup to write code, and so many more
but since last year ever since i started making money by writing code, my perspective has changed a fat bit since money brings some other things into life- experiences, quality of life, and materialism
materialism is definitely something ive actively tried to keep at a minimum
but new experiences, improving quality of life in small meaningful ways has made a lot of impact in my happiness levels and also ‘enjoyment’ of just daily life
walking into any place to try out something new or traveling somewhere without thinking twice is definitely something i didnt know i liked doing before
this might not just be because of money, might also be because of me becoming an adult and getting freedom but definitely having money definitely helps in this context, cuz if not there’ll another factor involved in being able to do that
so how this connects to code being a means to an end is- writing code how much ever is enjoyable is not all that life offers there’s so much more to life than just writing code which runs on a computer
but am not saying u should just do the bare minimum or stop doing that or something
just consider it as a means to an end and not your entire life.
“Put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn’t in the middle of the room. Life isn’t a support-system for art. It’s the other way around.”
life is the main thing, that’s why the desk is in the corner instead of centre
