dove into custom keyboards and learnt a bit
there are many layouts
100%, 90%, 80%, 75%, tkl, 65, 60 40
and there’s split, split is somewhat like 40
when typing in these 40% and split keebs, there are layers which you can access via a hotkey like upper / lower which is pretty cool
how are they built?
first you need a pcb and a kit
then you solder all the items onto the PCB, then you put it in the case which people 3d print apparently
and then you select switches you want
i went with akko lavender purple because they are tactile and also is thoccy which is how i want my keyboard to be
now for thoccy keebs, XDA type keycaps are preferred
there are many types of keycaps and switches
like cherry, XDA, SA, HSA etc etc
and switches there are reds, gateron blue, brown, purple, black etc
it’s of 3 types, clicky, tactile and linear
tactile is what i prefer ( linear is what im typing on and it has no response )
i want response, but at the same time i want thoccy
so i went with xda with purple
and for case, i have to 3d print
for soldering and lubing i’ve given it to a guy in mumbai who will buy all the things necessary, assemble it and ship it my way
there are some more things:
- you can customize which keys do what by a programmable interface
- you need trrs cable to connect the two parts of your split keyboard and you also need usb c - usb c to connect it to your mac 😋
the layout i got was lily58
which means there are 58 keys to use
