nodes

2 type of nodes

  • full nodes
  • light nodes

full nodes

  • archival type
  • pruned full node

archival

archival full nodes maintain a complete copy of the txn history right from the gensys block to the current one. responsible for enforcing consensys and helping with validating txns.

incase of a failure, the blockchain can be reconstructed while there’s 1 intact archival

  • mining nodes
  • staking nodes
  • authority nodes
  • master nodes

mining nodes help with creating new blocks on pow blockchains incentivized by block rewards

staking nodes help with validation for new blocks on proof of stake chains

authority nodes are used in partially decentralized networks where these nodes are handpicked by the entity behind the chain

master nodes can’t add new blocks but only validate and keep records of txns

pruned

simply a trimmed down version of an archival full node

download the entire blockchain and verify if it’s correct, then store only the recent block discarding the rest

otherwise they perform the same practices as the other full nodes

lightnodes

enables access to chains for laptops and smart phones

day-to-day blockchain activities like checking balances and broadcasting txns

but dont enforce network consensys

and only store relevant data and rely on fullnodes

eg. bitcoin lightning nodes
